The Alberta Electric System Operator is Canada’s first customer-focused exchange for electricity. As an independent system operator, the AESO leads the safe, reliable and economic operation and planning of Alberta’s interconnected power system. The AESO also facilitates Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2015, had 201 participants and approximately $4 Billion in annual energy transactions.

At the heart of Alberta’s wholesale real-time electricity market is the System Coordination Centre (SCC), which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a team of system controllers. The SCC features advanced technology that provides the infrastructure for real-time electric system operations. The Energy Management System enables system controllers to dispatch electricity to meet demand and monitor the status of the provincial electric system.

The Energy Trading System (ETS) is another critical technology system that facilitates the real-time wholesale electricity market. ETS receives electricity supply offers and demand bids from market participants and provides market information to our website, which may be accessed through the Market and System Reporting button on the AESO home page. ETS also receives electric metering data and performs financial settlement and billing functions for the wholesale market.
