Energy Trading System Information
The Energy Trading System (ETS) enables both spot and forward electricity markets. It receives energy supply offers and demand bids from market participants, receives metering data, provides market information to our website and performs settlement and billing.
Participants are required to apply for and receive a digital certificate in order to gain access to the confidential information residing on ETS.
Digital certificates
Certain communication with the AESO, including the process to submit bids and offers, register/accept net settlement instructions (NSI), and retrieve statements is handled through the Internet. To ensure that the Internet-based communication between participants and the AESO is secure, participants must purchase a digital certificate.
A digital certificate is your assurance that the website you access is the secure AESO Energy Trading System (ETS). At the same time, the certificate allows the ETS to recognize authorized system users and allow access to appropriate information.

ETS Training
ETS Sandbox
To go along with the ETS 4.0, the AESO redesigned the ETS sandbox so participants have a chance to train in the new ETS starting Nov. 17. The ETS sandbox is a training environment offered to new and existing participants to practice making transactions without being in a live setting.
If you’re interested in checking out the ETS sandbox, you’ll need to request a separate training digital certificate (send an e-mail to cert.admin@aeso.ca). Along with the new certificate, the URL to the ETS sandbox will be provided.
Participant Manual
The participant manual provides general information about the AESO, and procedures for the AESO’s communication tools that are used to participate in the market. The document includes instructions for installing a digital certificate, navigating and reporting in the ETS, as well as doing submissions to the market.
