Heartland Transmission Development

The AESO has designated transmission development between Edmonton and the Heartland area northeast of the Edmonton area as critical transmission infrastructure (CTI). With the passing of the Electric Statutes Amendment Act (ESAA), the need for this reinforcement has been approved.

Transmission facility owners AltaLink and EPCOR (the Heartland Project Team) are conducting their public consultation process in support of developing the Facilities Application to the regulator for this project. Feasibility Study for 500 kV AC underground cables for the use in the Edmonton Region

The AESO initiated a study in June 2009 to explore the technical feasibility of utilizing high voltage AC underground transmission technology for a portion of the Heartland project. Working with public stakeholders, the AESO engaged an independent consulting firm, Cable Consulting International Ltd. (CCI), to explore this technology.
