Competitive Process
The AESO is introducing competition into Alberta’s electricity transmission industry with a new procurement process to select organizations to develop, design, build finance, own, operate, and maintain new major transmission infrastructure in the province of Alberta, Canada. The Fort McMurray West 500 kV Transmission Project will be the first transmission project to follow the Competitive Process.
An application for the AESO’s Competitive Process was submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in September 2011. The AUC approved the process on February 14, 2013.
AESO CP Mandate
The AESO is mandated by government to develop this initiative by the Transmission Regulation (86/2007) and then have it approved by the provincial electricity regulator, the AUC.
