How do I become a participant?
Under the Electric Utilities Act, only market participants can buy and sell electricity in Alberta.
Joining the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) involves:
- Completing the participant application form
- Signing an agreement to abide by the ISO Rules
- Paying an annual participant fee, currently $150 plus GST
- Purchasing a digital certificate for secure access to the Energy Trading System, currently $100 plus GST (per certificate)
- Arranging transmission or distribution access
- Meeting the AESO prudential requirements
- Complying with the ISO Rules
ISO Rules
Market participants also pay a trading charge (currently 14.1 cents per megawatt hour) on all energy exchanged through the AESO.
