Chapel Rock-to-Pincher Creek Transmission Development (7064)
The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has cancelled the Chapel Rock-to-Pincher Creek Transmission Development. This decision follows extensive planning, stakeholder engagement, and a reassessment of interest in new electricity generation in the Pincher Creek area. The AESO has determined that the proposed 240 kV transmission circuit and substation are no longer required to meet Alberta’s electricity needs.
The need for this transmission development reinforcement was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) as part of the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement Needs Identification Document (NID) on September 8, 2009. The NID, including all appendices, engagement material and amendments approved by the AUC are located in “Archived Materials” below.
The Chapel Rock-to-Pincher Creek Transmission Development project included:
- Construction of the previously approved Chapel Rock substation.
- One new 240 kV transmission circuit to connect the new Chapel Rock substation to one of two existing substations – either Castle Rock Ridge or Goose Lake. Based on additional work as part of the planning process, and taking stakeholder feedback into consideration, it was determined that a second 240 kV transmission line is not required within the next five-10 years.
