Mothball Outage (MBO) Addition to Energy Trading System (ETS)

The AESO has resolved a critical issue with this change and a new effective date has been determined.

Effective July 17, 2023, the AESO will implement a change to the Energy Trading System (ETS) to allow participants to submit Mothball Outages (MBO). This change is being made to provide better reference to existing Mothball Outages when submitting new AC outages or a new MBO and is required to facilitate the reporting of mothball outages as consulted on with stakeholders in the mothball rule review initiative. As part of the consultation, the AESO recommended to separate and aggregate the reporting of mothball outages to promote transparency regarding mothball outages in the market. A public mothball outage report will be implemented at a later date.

A new data entry screen will be available for submitting Mothball Outages in ETS in a similar way to the existing AC Outage submissions.

A column has also been added to the ETS Energy Submission page to display the MBO value for the applicable hour(s) for the asset.

Note that following the submission of a MBO, the AC for the asset will automatically adjust to equal to MC minus the MBO.

For full instructions on submitting or revising a MBO, please see our Energy Trading System Pool Participant Manual for Submissions, Information Document ID #2013-001R.

As a result of this change, additional changes will occur to the user interface of other areas of ETS. Details on these changes can be found here.

Pool participants can review and test this enhancement ahead of time in our ETS Training environment from June 14, 2023, to June 27, 2023. A training digital certificate is required to access the ETS Training environment. Digital certificates cost $100 plus GST per certificate, per year. This cost will appear on your monthly pool statement. To request access to this environment, please have your corporate contact submit our application form to cert.admin@aeso.ca.

The application form and link to the Training environment can be found on Energy Trading System (ETS) under ETS Training Environment.
