DOS Performance Reporting
In Alberta, most directly connected customers who take energy off the transmission system pay for system access service through the Demand Transmission Service (DTS) rate.
Eligible customers seeking additional transmission capacity above their DTS contracted amount may apply for Demand Opportunity Service (DOS). DOS is offered as an interruptible service at a lower cost than DTS. Revenue collected from DOS is used to offset the AESO’s annual revenue requirement recovered from DTS customers.
The AESO’s quarterly DOS Performance Reports share statistics to provide all transmission system customers with transparency on the additional revenue generated by DOS, including:
- Number of Rate DOS applicants
- Energy consumed under the rate
- Total revenue collected
The AESO received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in Proceeding 28989 (Decision 28989-D01-2024) to update Rate DOS. The changes, designed to boost usage and generate additional transmission revenue to reduce DTS rates, took effect in early 2025.
As part of this proceeding, the AESO committed to publishing quarterly Rate DOS metrics reports to track performance, customer applications, energy consumption and revenue collected.
