Large Load Projects
Connecting data centres and other large loads to Alberta’s electricity grid is a rapidly evolving process. Large loads introduce complex technical and operational challenges, and those without generation significantly strain supply. The AESO is committed to action, by advancing projects efficiently while ensuring a safe, reliable, and affordable grid.

Phase 1: Large Load Integration | Complete
The AESO is pleased to announce the conclusion of Phase 1 of the Large Load Integration program. All 1,200 MW of the interim connection limit was successfully allocated, and the following projects have executed load contracts:
- P2936 GLDC Load - 970 MW
- P3083 Keephills Data Centre Phase I - 230 MW
These projects will now proceed through the Connection Process and are updated in the November 2025 Project List. All other large load requests (including any additional MW for the above projects) will be included in Phase 2 of the Large Load Integration program. Pre-engagement on Phase 2 has begun here.
Data Centre Update (September 2025)
The process for connecting data centres to Alberta's electricity grid continues to evolve. Interest remains high, and the AESO continues to advance technical and framework initiatives to provide clarity while ensuring a safe, reliable and affordable grid. We have published a new update, including progress on these initiatives, the current state of data centre applications, and next steps for the Large Load Integration Program.

Information Session | Phase 1: Large Load Integration
The AESO held a virtual information session on June 4, 2025. Materials and a recording from this session are available on AESO Engage > Phase I: Large Load Integration.
New Data Centre Information Requirements
As detailed in the Data Centre Connection Process Update, data centres present novel technical and operating challenges. The AESO requires specific information that differs from that of a typical load to effectively respond to a request for system access service.
To that end, the AESO has created a list of characteristics for data centres to provide as projects progress through the Connection Process. This is an initial document to provide visibility to industry and the list will be refined over time. Gate requirements are proposed but not mandatory, and the AESO is working with in-flight projects to obtain the information as work on projects proceeds in all stages.

Data Centre Connection Process Update
In response to the increasing number of data centres in the Connection Process Project List, the AESO has developed a comprehensive update, including background on data centre applications, an overview of challenges, and a path forward. This approach emphasizes transparency as the AESO works to advance projects while ensuring a safe, reliable, and affordable grid.
