Alberta - British Columbia Intertie Restoration (7006)
The Alberta–British Columbia Intertie Restoration (AIR) Project aims to increase Alberta’s ability to import electricity from British Columbia to strengthen system reliability, resilience, and support continued economic and population growth. Although the intertie was originally designed for higher capacity, long-standing reliability and equipment constraints have limited imports to about 800 MW.
Through targeted upgrades to existing infrastructure the project will restore capacity to approximately 950 MW, in line with provincial policy and Alberta’s Transmission Regulation. AESO’s preferred approach includes building a new substation with series compensation near the existing 500 kV transmission line, called transmission line 1201L, improving line capacity through selective clearance upgrades, and increasing transformer capacity at the Bennett 520S substation, near Langdon, Alberta.
