Airdrie Area Transmission Development (7119)
The AESO is assessing the need for transmission development in the Airdrie and north Calgary areas to support load growth while maintaining system reliability.
Existing transmission facilities have limited capacity to serve anticipated growth and customer projects, particularly during certain system contingencies. Without transmission development or other measures, the system may not be able to reliably meet forecast demand in accordance with Alberta reliability standards.
In response, the AESO is conducting system studies to identify and compare alternatives for meeting the area's long-term transmission needs. The assessment will consider reliability, cost, schedule, technical performance and appropriate project staging.
The AESO will advance a solution that responds to confirmed demand while minimizing the risk of unnecessary or stranded infrastructure. Filing to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is targeted for 2027.
