    Southeast System Strength (7101)

The grid in southeastern Alberta is facing system strength and stability challenges that have led to transmission congestion. The AESO is committed to improving system performance in the southeast. We are evaluating a range of solutions that could reduce congestion by improving stability, including synchronous condenser, battery and transmission line options.

We are considering these system upgrades alongside operational enhancements including collaborative efforts with generator owners to improve control system performance.

We will continue to provide updates to stakeholders as we work to confirm a preferred solution.

Depending on the solution, a Needs Identification Document (NID) may be required, with a potential filing to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) targeted for Q1 2027.
