Action required: Review ETS submissions for Alberta Time
ANNOUNCEMENT:
Effective 2:00 a.m. November 1, 2026, the AESO will operate year-round at UTC-6 (Alberta Time or ABT). Alberta will not move clocks back on November 1.
Alberta Time applies to all AESO systems and data exchanges, regardless of where your company or staff are located.
Please review your future outage and Net Settlement Instruction (NSI) submissions in ETS and correct any times that no longer match your intended schedules.
What changed in ETS:
On October 7, 2026, the AESO updated the Energy Trading System (ETS) to use UTC-6 year-round. ETS stores timestamps in UTC and converts them to local time for display.
Future times originally entered using Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC-7) now display in Alberta Time (UTC-6).
What is impacted:
Submissions made before the October 7 deployment used the previous MST/MDT time convention. Submissions made after the October 7 deployment use Alberta Time (UTC-6). In both cases, timestamps are stored in UTC.
Affected records include future outage, derate and testing entries, including AC entries and MBO outages, and NSIs with start or end times originally entered in MST.
Review all applicable future November-to-March periods, not just November 1, 2026.
What market participants need to do
-
Review pre-deployment submissions: Review applicable future outage and NSI submissions made before the October 7 deployment. Confirm dates, start/end times and hourly AC values match your intended schedules.
-
Correct affected entries: Update or resubmit records in ETS where needed.
-
Prepare connected systems: Identify affected systems, devices and tools, update time settings and test submissions before November 1.
-
Validate after November 1: Check data during the first few days after November 1 and again when clocks would normally change in spring 2027.
Market participants remain responsible for the accuracy of their submissions and data exchanges. Misaligned time settings may result in inaccurate data and potential non-compliance with AESO requirements.
